### Jim Donovan Steps Away to Focus on Health, Leaves Stirring Legacy
Jim Donovan, the venerable voice of the Browns Radio Network, has announced his decision to step down to focus on his ongoing battle with cancer. In a heartfelt letter to Browns fans at the end of the 2024 preseason, Donovan revealed that his cancer had returned in an aggressive manner, prompting his difficult decision to leave behind a long-standing career.
In a touching ceremony on September 22, Donovan was inducted into the 2024 Class of Browns Legends. Phil Dawson, a respected former player, had the honor of personally notifying Donovan of his induction shortly before the event. With Donovan unable to attend, his daughter Meghan accepted the Browns Legends jacket on his behalf.
Reflecting on Donovan’s storied career, Dawson praised Donovan's unique ability to maintain honesty and positivity in his broadcasts. "He kept it real, but he kept a positive tone to it," Dawson shared. "He just always could find that balance - authentic, real, accurate, but he was still supportive, even when there wasn't a whole lot to support. And I know the players appreciated that. I know I certainly appreciated that."
Donovan’s battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia began in 2000. After a successful bone marrow transplant in 2011, he continued to monitor the disease. However, in May 2023, he announced a relapse and began more aggressive treatment. Despite the challenges, Donovan's devotion to the Browns endured.
Although he took a medical leave in September 2023, Donovan made a memorable return to the radio booth in November during Week 11 of the 2023 season. Serving as Dawg Pound Captain, Donovan smashed a Steelers-themed guitar before kickoff, sending the crowd into a frenzy. He then called the Browns’ 13-10 victory over the Steelers, embodying his unwavering spirit.
Donovan's broadcasting career, which began as a sports director for WJON radio in Minnesota, spanned nearly four decades at WKYC. Born in Boston and a 1978 Boston University graduate, Donovan fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a sports broadcaster. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including three Lower Great Lakes Emmy Awards and induction into both the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame and the Cleveland Press Club Journalism Hall of Fame.
From his days covering NBC Sports' NFL games and Olympic events to his tenure as play-by-play announcer for the Cleveland Guardians, Donovan's voice has become synonymous with sports in Cleveland. His legacy is punctuated not only by professional achievements but by the lives he touched and the excitement he brought to countless games.
Jim Donovan’s retirement marks the end of an era, but his influence and contributions to sports broadcasting will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
