In a recent lawsuit filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, at least five contestants of the reality competition program, "Beast Games," on Amazon Prime, have accused the production companies involved, as well as Amazon itself, of subjecting them to exploitative and unsafe working conditions. The lawsuit also names a production company linked to popular YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson, known as "MrBeast."
"Beast Games" garnered attention for its promise of a staggering $5 million prize money, drawing aspiring participants for the physically demanding challenges reminiscent of those featured on Donaldson's YouTube channel. However, the complaint alleges that the contestants were shamelessly exploited by the defendants, who created a work environment that jeopardized their safety and well-being.
According to the lawsuit, the contestants' experiences were marred by unreasonable conditions, including being confined to enclosed spaces and being underfed and overtired. The complaint argues that the contestants were forced to compete in physically and mentally exhausting challenges that carried the potential for injury. It further alleges that during production, there was an insufficient presence of medical staff to attend to potential injuries.
Apart from the unsafe conditions, the lawsuit also highlights accusations of rampant sexism and misogyny on the set. The female contestants, in particular, allegedly suffered due to the fostered culture of misogyny and sexism within the production. The complaint claims that a "MrBeast Handbook" was followed by the production crew, which encouraged poor behavior, including the promotion of male participants to engage in inappropriate actions.
Details about the specific incidents and the identity of the five plaintiffs remain redacted in the 50-page complaint. However, it does state that four of the plaintiffs reside in California, and two of them are residents of Los Angeles County.
The lawsuit argues that the defendants, including Amazon and the affiliated production company, failed to create a safe and healthful working environment for the contestants. It claims that they did not provide sufficient food or drink, restricted sleep, and subjected the contestants to unreasonable risks.
Amazon, which acquired the streaming rights to "Beast Games," is yet to formally respond to the allegations made in the lawsuit. The legal action seeks compensation for the plaintiffs, while also shedding light on the alleged mistreatment and unsafe working conditions endured by the game show contestants.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding the well-being and safety of individuals engaged in such reality competition programs. It raises questions about the responsibility of production companies and streaming platforms in ensuring that contestants are treated with respect and provided with a secure working environment.
