In a thrilling and eventful qualifying session for the Hungarian Grand Prix, Lando Norris emerged as the pole-sitter after a series of twists and turns. The McLaren driver showcased his skill in challenging wet-dry conditions, navigating through two red flag incidents and a frantic final dash to the finish line.
During the first runs of Q3, Norris set an impressive provisional pole time of 1m 15.227s, putting him at the top of the leaderboard. However, the session was interrupted when Yuki Tsunoda suffered a heavy crash, causing a red flag. With just over two minutes left on the clock, the session resumed, but changing weather conditions prevented most of the drivers from improving their lap times.
Despite the challenging conditions, Norris held on to his pole position, securing a slim 0.022s advantage over his teammate Oscar Piastri. Max Verstappen, who opted not to complete another lap, took third place for Red Bull, followed by Ferrari's Carlos Sainz in fourth and Lewis Hamilton in fifth for Mercedes.
The qualifying session also saw strong performances from Charles Leclerc in sixth place for Ferrari, as well as Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll in seventh and eighth respectively. Daniel Ricciardo secured ninth for Red Bull, while Tsunoda, despite the crash, managed to secure the tenth spot.
Notable names who missed out on progressing to Q3 included Nico Hulkenberg in the Haas, who missed out by just one hundredth of a second, and Valtteri Bottas from Kick Sauber, who finished in 12th. The Williams duo of Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant, along with Kevin Magnussen from Haas, also failed to advance, finishing in 13th, 14th, and 15th places respectively.
Q1 saw significant drama when Sergio Perez crashed his Red Bull into the barriers, bringing out the red flags. Perez, unable to continue, ended the day in P16. George Russell from Mercedes also faced disappointment, finishing in P17, while Zhou Guanyu, Esteban Ocon, and Pierre Gasly exited in 18th, 19th, and 20th positions respectively.
The session provided intense excitement as Ricciardo set the fastest time in Q1, while Russell's early lap saw him pushed down to P17. Perez's crash added to the pressure on the Mexican driver, who has been facing criticism following a string of poor results.
Q2 saw Norris maintain his dominance with the quickest lap time, while Hamilton narrowly secured a spot in Q3, pipping Hulkenberg by just one hundredth of a second. Bottas, Albon, Sargeant, and Magnussen failed to progress.
In the final segment of qualifying, Verstappen led the way, but it was Norris who stole the spotlight with an impressive lap time of 1m 15.227s, securing pole position. Piastri claimed a strong third place, while Sainz and Hamilton completed the top five.
The Hungarian Grand Prix promises to be an exciting affair with Norris starting from pole position for the third time in his Formula 1 career. The race is set to begin at 1500 local time on Sunday, and fans can catch all the action from the Hungaroring.
