Petaluma-based Lagunitas Brewing Company is set to close its brewing, packaging, and restaurant facility located in Chicago this summer, as stated in a letter sent to employees and obtained by ABC7 Chicago on Thursday. The closure, expected to take place on August 1, comes as Lagunitas continues its global expansion following the acquisition of the remaining stake by Heineken International.

According to the letter, a small number of employees will remain at the 1843 S. Washtenaw Ave. location to work in the warehouse. However, the changes will affect a total of 86 employees, some of whom will have the option to retain remote roles or relocate to Lagunitas' original brew house in Petaluma, California.

In a news release, Lagunitas stated that the move is part of their efforts to future-proof the organization in light of evolving trends in the craft beverage industry. The consolidation of brewing operations in California is expected to create a more efficient and flexible supply chain while allowing for increased focus on innovation and sustainable brewing practices.

Sam Kennedy, a Lagunitas spokesperson, emphasized the company's commitment to managing this transition carefully and respecting the Chicago Lagunitas employees who will be impacted. The release also states that Chicago remains a priority market for Lagunitas, and they will continue serving partner bars, restaurants, and stores in the area with their renowned IPAs and other brews.

The closing of the Chicago facility marks a significant change for Lagunitas, which has had headquarters in Chicago's Douglass Park neighborhood since its opening in 2014. The brewery had temporarily closed its doors to visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic but had recently reopened.

Affected employees will receive retention incentives to support them through the transition, along with departure packages that include job-placement assistance and other support services.

As Lagunitas Brewing Company consolidates its operations in California, the organization remains committed to maintaining its strong presence in Chicago while pursuing global growth opportunities in the craft beer sector.
