In the first two games of the 2024 NBA Finals, the Dallas Mavericks have faced an uphill battle against the Boston Celtics, and a significant factor in their struggles has been Kyrie Irving's poor performance. Irving, who now plays for the Mavericks after leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers, has been unable to find his rhythm against his former team.

Irving's shooting has been abysmal, with just 13 made shots and zero 3-pointers in the series so far. He is shooting a disappointing 35.1 percent from the field and has only managed to contribute eight total assists. The Celtics have employed a one-on-one defensive strategy against Irving, often switching on pick-and-rolls to limit his impact.

What stands out the most is Irving's shooting percentage, which is almost 10 percent worse than expected based on his shot selection. Boston's perimeter defenders, including All-Defensive team members Derrick White and Jrue Holiday, have effectively contained Irving's scoring abilities. Even when left unguarded within 6 feet, Irving has failed to convert any of his 3-point attempts.

In particular, Irving has struggled with shots near the basket, missing several opportunities that he would usually make. Despite his reputation as an exceptional dribbler, his moves have often led him to the space around the basket rather than directly at it. Unfortunately, he has been unable to convert these chances during the finals.

Irving's difficulty against the Celtics goes beyond this series, as he has now lost 12 consecutive games to Boston, including his time with the Brooklyn Nets. The hostile atmosphere in Boston, with boos, blowup dolls, and chants directed at him, has undoubtedly affected Irving. Although he hasn't publicly admitted to being affected, he acknowledged that the TD Garden atmosphere was on his mind.

The Dallas Mavericks, led by Luka Dončić, are heavily reliant on Irving's performance in the finals. Dončić has already shown his prowess by forcing the Celtics to make defensive adjustments in Game 2. If both Irving and Dončić can step up their scoring, it may create opportunities for the rest of the Mavericks' team.

Irving recognizes the importance of his contribution and expressed his desire to play well for his teammates. He remains optimistic, understanding the small sample size of a seven-game series and the stakes involved at this high level of competition.

As the only player in the Mavericks' rotation with previous finals experience, Irving's ability to rally and respond to adversity will be crucial. In the 2016 NBA Finals, he started slowly but went on to average 31 points on 51 percent shooting in the final five games, leading the Cavaliers to victory.

The Dallas Mavericks have a tough road ahead to overcome their 0-2 deficit, but Irving's ability to find his form and contribute efficiently will undoubtedly play a vital role in their comeback efforts. The pressure is on Irving to rise to the occasion and help his team turn the tide in Game 3.
