In a bid to modernize the royal fleet, King Charles is set to replace his 15-year-old helicopters this year, as the income from the Crown Estates reached an impressive £1.1 million last year. This decision comes as the monarchy anticipates a significant boost of £45 million in funding during the 2025/2026 financial year, thanks to rising profits in 2023/2024.
The monarchy's finances, as revealed in the annual accounts, are primarily supported by the Sovereign Grant, which grants the royal family 12 percent of the net profits from the Crown Estate. This grant is based on funds acquired two years prior. Currently, the household's income remains steady at £86.3 million for the 2024/2025 financial year, consistent with the previous three years.
The allocated funds are essential for the smooth functioning of the royal family, covering expenses such as running the royal household and facilitating transportation costs for formal engagements. Notably, over 170 helicopter journeys were undertaken in the last year, with a total cost exceeding £1 million. To upgrade this aspect, two brand new AgustaWestland AW139 helicopters will be acquired, ensuring the family's transportation needs are met effectively.
Aside from the transportation upgrade, the Crown has outlined its plans to invest in an eco-friendly overhaul of the monarchy. One such initiative has already been implemented at Windsor Castle, where solar panels have been installed. Additionally, efforts are underway to convert two of King Charles' State Bentleys to run on biofuel, aligning with the global push for sustainable practices.
The future prospects for the monarchy appear promising, with the expected increase in funding providing ample opportunities for necessary upgrades and environmentally conscious initiatives. The investment in modern helicopters and adoption of sustainable practices not only showcases a commitment to innovation but also offers a glimpse into the monarchy's ongoing efforts to adapt to changing times while upholding its regal traditions.
