A tragic incident unfolded at Campbellsville University in Kentucky as 18-year-old Josiah Kilman, a student on the wrestling team, was discovered unresponsive in his dorm room on Saturday, around 12:43 a.m. Despite being rushed to an area hospital, Kilman was pronounced dead. The Kentucky State Medical Examiner's Office is set to perform an autopsy to determine the cause of his death.
In connection with Kilman's death, 21-year-old Charles E. Escalara, also a student part of the university's wrestling team, was arrested and charged with one count of murder and one count of second-degree burglary. Escalara was apprehended in a barn without incident after an arrest warrant was issued for him following Kilman's tragic discovery.
Hailing from Columbia Falls, Montana, Kilman was attending the university on a biblical scholarship. Described by his family as an avid athlete and faithful religious leader, they expressed how he influenced many lives with his compassion, kindness, and love. Campbellsville University President Joseph Hopkins acknowledged the deep impact Kilman had within the campus community.
Before Escalara's arrest, the university assured students that no continued threat was identified, but recommended heightened precautions in the campus area. Escalara is currently being held at the Taylor County Detention Center on a $2 million bond. It remains unclear if he has legal representation to speak on his behalf. The Campbellsville University community mourns the loss of Josiah Kilman, remembering him as a bright light and beacon of hope.
