Kayla Harrison credits Ronda Rousey for paving the way for her successful and lucrative MMA career. Prior to transitioning to mixed martial arts, Harrison was a two-time Olympic champion in judo, a feat she shares in common with Rousey. As Harrison now prepares to face Julianna Pena in the co-main event of UFC 316, she acknowledges that her journey would have been much different without Rousey's trailblazing efforts.
Harrison and Rousey crossed paths frequently in their judo careers, although they only competed against each other once in 2005. Rousey emerged victorious in that match, but both athletes went on to become legends on the U.S. Judo team. Harrison, who is three years younger than Rousey, revealed that their encounter came at a turbulent time in her life. At just 15 years old, Harrison was enduring personal hardships, including being sexually abused by her judo coach.
Despite the challenges she faced, Harrison used that experience as motivation to excel in the sport. She clinched Olympic gold medals in judo in both 2012 and 2016 before making her professional MMA debut in June 2018. Remarkably, she won her first MMA fight using Rousey's iconic armbar technique, submitting Brittney Elkin at PFL 2 in Chicago.
Rousey's impact on the sport extends beyond her competitive achievements. Before she made her debut, UFC's Dana White famously declared that women would never fight in the octagon. Rousey shattered that barrier and opened doors for future female fighters, including Harrison. "Ronda had an amazing career and I would not be here if it were not for Ronda Rousey," Harrison stated at UFC 316 Media Day. "I have nothing but gratitude for her and the glass ceilings that she shattered for women in this sport."
As she prepares for her upcoming bout, Harrison remains focused on cementing her legacy in MMA, just as she did in judo. Reflecting on her journey and the role Rousey played, she recognizes the significance of her achievements and the path that lies ahead.
