In a significant development for the future of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals, the state of Kansas has passed a proposal that could lead to the construction of new stadiums for both teams. The Kansas Legislature approved the proposal, which includes the provision of issuing bonds to help finance the new stadiums.
The proposal, which passed with a 27-8 majority in the Kansas Senate, involves the use of Sales Tax and Revenue bonds, commonly known as STAR bonds, to cover up to 70 percent of the stadium's cost. The leases for both teams at the Truman Sports Complex are set to expire in 2031, indicating a potential long-term plan for any relocation.
While it is unclear whether the teams will actually move to Kansas, the positive response from both franchises is indicative of the potential for a shift. Both the Royals and the Chiefs released statements expressing their excitement and willingness to explore the options presented by the Kansas STAR bond proposal.
Speculation is that the Village West area of Kansas City, Kansas, also known as the Legends Outlets area, could possibly become the new home for the Chiefs and/or Royals. This area is already home to notable attractions such as the Legends Outlets Kansas City shopping mall, Children's Mercy Park (home to Sporting KC of Major League Soccer), and the Kansas Speedway.
The location of the new stadiums, if confirmed, will be interesting, as ample parking space is crucial. Chiefs representative Korb Maxwell emphasized the importance of ensuring enough acres for parking, in order to maintain the beloved tailgating experience cherished by Chiefs fans.
Kansas residents may have mixed feelings regarding the potential relocation and the use of tax money for the construction of new stadiums. However, many residents are likely excited about the possibility of having professional sports teams in their state. The convenience of attending games, as well as the potential for increased revenue and job opportunities, could bring a sense of pride and economic benefits to the state.
While a move to Kansas is not imminent and discussions with the state of Missouri are still ongoing, the passing of the proposal is a significant step forward. The future location of the Chiefs and Royals remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Kansas is eagerly embracing the possibility of these teams becoming part of their community and making their mark in the state's sporting landscape.
