Hundreds of mourners gathered at the Redemptorist Catholic Church in Kansas City, Missouri on Saturday to bid farewell to Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a 43-year-old DJ from the Kansas City area. She was one of about two dozen individuals who were shot during the celebration of the Chiefs' Super Bowl victory on February 14 outside Union Station. The funeral mass paid tribute to Lopez-Galvan as a loving wife and mother, known for her infectious smile that could brighten any room.
During the 90-minute service, attendees, some wearing Chiefs jerseys, listened to a mariachi band perform in honor of the music-loving Lopez-Galvan. She had joined the crowd of around 1 million people for the championship parade and rally, where the fatal shooting took place due to a dispute between different groups.
Two men have been charged in her death, while two juveniles are facing gun charges. Lopez-Galvan's family expressed gratitude towards the police and prosecutors for the legal actions taken. The community has shown support for her family, notably with pop star Taylor Swift donating $100,000, and Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker assisting in fulfilling a request for a jersey for her burial.
Lopez-Galvan, known for her work as one of the few Latina DJs in the area, had a deep connection to Kansas City through her family's involvement in the local Latino community. Her tragic death has left a void in the hearts of those who knew her, with her brother, Beto Lopez, emphasizing her loving and compassionate nature in the wake of the senseless act that claimed her life.
As the Kansas City community continues to mourn the loss of Lopez-Galvan, her memory lives on through the legacy she left behind in her family, friends, and the hearts of those who were touched by her presence.
