In a move to meet the NFL's roster deadline, the Kansas City Chiefs made several cuts and a trade on Tuesday, according to multiple sources. The team's wide receiver Kadarius Toney, who played a significant role in their Super Bowl victory last season, was among those let go.
Toney, acquired by the Chiefs in a trade with the New York Giants earlier this year, had a memorable moment in Super Bowl LVII, returning a punt 65 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles to set up a touchdown for Kansas City. The play, according to NFL Next Gen Stats, bolstered the Chiefs' win-probability percentage from 66.5% to 79.6%. Unfortunately, Toney struggled with injuries and drops last season, leaving the team unimpressed during training camp.
Joining Toney on the list of cuts were running back Deneric Prince and undrafted rookie linebacker Swayze Bozeman. However, there is a silver lining for Bozeman, as he may become a candidate for the Chiefs' practice squad if he clears waivers.
Other reported decisions by the Chiefs include the release of receiver Justyn Ross and running back Louis Rees-Zammit, as reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz. Additionally, tight end Irv Smith Jr. was cut by the team, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
In the midst of the roster cuts, the Chiefs also engaged in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys. The team acquired tight end Peyton Hendershot in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2026 draft. Hendershot, a 2022 undrafted rookie from Indiana, has showcased his abilities with 15 catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns over the past two seasons, while also contributing on special teams.
With Tuesday's 3 p.m. Central deadline looming, the Chiefs, along with all other NFL teams, had to reduce their rosters to a maximum of 53 players. The team will also finalize its 16-man practice squad later this week.
As the season opener approaches, the Kansas City Chiefs have made strategic moves to shape their roster and enhance their chances of success in the coming season. Fans eagerly await the unveiling of the final lineup as the team prepares to defend their championship title.
