In a recent announcement, the Kadokawa Group revealed that it experienced a major cyberattack on June 8th, affecting the servers located in their data center. The attack involved ransomware and specifically targeted Niconico and its associated services. Kadokawa Group is currently working on finding solutions and implementing workarounds to quickly restore normalcy to its systems and business operations.
Although Kadokawa Group did not mention FromSoftware, one of its partners, in the disclosure of the affected businesses, it is unclear if the studio's data and systems were compromised in the attack. Kadokawa Group further stated that they do not store any credit card information in their systems. They are actively investigating the incident and plan to provide an update on the systems and the ransomware attack in July.
This is not the first time a FromSoftware partner has fallen victim to a cyberattack. Bandai Namco, another partner of the renowned studio, also faced a ransomware attack back in 2022. Additionally, there have been several other instances of video game companies being targeted, including Capcom, CD Projekt Red, and Insomniac Games. Rockstar Games experienced a notorious data breach in 2022, resulting in the leak of an in-development build of Grand Theft Auto VI. As a response, Rockstar Games limited remote work to enhance the security of their games.
While it remains uncertain what FromSoftware's next project will be, fans are eagerly hoping for Bloodborne 2.
