In a recent development, Justin Timberlake's lawyer, Edward Burke, has come forward to assert that the popstar was "not intoxicated" at the time of his arrest for driving under the influence (DWI) last month. The 43-year-old singer-songwriter was detained by police officers in New York after allegedly running a stop sign and failing to stay on the right side of the road.
During Timberlake's first court hearing, which took place on Friday, Burke argued that the police had made "a very significant number of errors" in the case. He emphasized, "The most important fact to know about this case is that Justin was not intoxicated and should not have been arrested for DWI." Speaking outside the Sag Harbor Village Justice Court, Burke stated that Timberlake fully cooperated with law enforcement and held great respect for them.
Timberlake, however, was not present in court as he had a conflicting engagement with the commencement of his Everything I Thought It Was world tour at the Tauron Arena in Krakow. Instead, he will be re-arraigned virtually next month.
The arrest occurred in Sag Harbor, an exclusive summer destination for celebrities in the Hamptons on Long Island. According to a charging document, when officers stopped Timberlake, his eyes were described as "bloodshot and glassy," and he exuded a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Furthermore, his speech was reportedly slowed, and he performed poorly on the sobriety tests administered by the police. The document also mentioned that Timberlake refused to take a breathalyser test.
Reportedly, when the officer who stopped him questioned Timberlake, the popstar allegedly claimed to have had "one martini" and insisted that he was just following his friends home.
It is worth noting that Timberlake has previously been open about seeking help for excessive drinking. This marks his first performance since revealing a serious health condition two years ago.
Despite the allegations, Timberlake's legal team remains confident that the DWI charge will be dismissed, citing the singer's sobriety at the time of the incident. The case is set to proceed with the virtual re-arraignment next month.
