In a one-hour practice session leading up to the Top 12 battle for pole position at the 108th Running of the Indianapolis 500, Team Penske's Josef Newgarden emerged as the fastest driver on the track. The defending Indy 500 champion secured the quickest lap at 234.052mph and an impressive four-lap average of 233.708mph. Newgarden's No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet benefited from a tow on his second lap during a simulated qualifying run.

Speaking after the practice, Newgarden expressed satisfaction with his performance despite the challenging track temperatures. He acknowledged the team's efforts throughout the month and expressed confidence in his Shell-sponsored car's speed. Newgarden plans to make two more runs and aims to be competitive in the upcoming race.

Felix Rosenqvist of Meyer Shank Racing secured the second-best four-lap average speed at 232.851mph, followed closely by Scott McLaughlin, also from Team Penske, with a pace of 232.655mph. The Arrow McLaren duo of Pato O'Ward and Alexander Rossi claimed the fourth and fifth positions, respectively, with four-lap averages of 232.637mph and 232.495mph.

The practice session was not without its challenges, as an issue with the plenum—now the seventh occurrence for teams using Chevrolet engines—affected Will Power of Team Penske. Despite a hiccup on his opening lap, Power managed to finish with a speed of 227.276mph. However, the plenum event impacted his overall speed and caused vibrations in the car. Power acknowledged the setback and recognized the difficulty of securing a top-six position in the qualifying.

Takuma Sato, a two-time Indy 500 winner, attained ninth place in his No. 75 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda, while Ryan Hunter-Reay, the 2014 Indy 500 winner, secured the tenth spot in the No. 23 Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Chevrolet.

Santino Ferrucci of AJ Foyt Racing faced multiple aborted attempts during his four-lap run, and Rinus VeeKay from Ed Carpenter Racing chose to remain in the garage following an early qualifying crash.

In the battle for the remaining three spots to complete the field of 33, Katherine Legge led the pack in the one-hour practice. Driving the No. 51 Dale Coyne Racing Honda, Legge showed improvement from Saturday's qualifying and recorded a best lap of 231.304mph with a four-lap average of 231.011mph. Marcus Ericsson, the current Indy 500 winner, achieved a four-lap average speed of 230.531mph, while Graham Rahal faced challenges due to a suspected right-rear issue during his run.

Rahal acknowledged the team's mistake and expressed gratitude for catching the issue before it caused major damage to his No. 15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda.

With the stage now set for the Top 12 battle for pole position, anticipation mounts as drivers prepare to compete in one of the most revered races in motorsport.
