In the aftermath of UFC 302, Jon "Bones" Jones has expressed his agreement with UFC CEO Dana White's comments regarding the pound-for-pound rankings. Islam Makhachev's successful title defense at the event sparked the debate once again, with White asserting that only Jones deserves the coveted top spot.
Makhachev showcased his elite skills in an impressive fifth-round victory over Dustin Poirier, solidifying his position as the reigning UFC Lightweight Champion. Despite sustaining some damage in the title fight, the 155-pound titleholder proved his mettle and further strengthened his claim to the pound-for-pound throne.
During the post-fight press conference, Dana White emphasized that Jon Jones was the rightful holder of the pound-for-pound crown. Taking to his X account, Jones reciprocated the sentiment and expressed his appreciation for the UFC boss's recognition. Jones acknowledged the potential backlash from critics but maintained that it was hard to argue with White's opinion, considering his longstanding involvement in the sport since UFC 1.
"It felt awesome to get that level of recognition from the boss, the man that's literally been here since UFC 1. I know the haters are not gonna like his comments but Dana's a pretty hard person to argue with. @danawhite has had a front row seat to my entire career, facts are facts," Jones conveyed in his response.
Since claiming the UFC Heavyweight Championship in March 2023, Jones has encountered a setback due to an injury, preventing him from making his first title defense against Stipe Miocic at UFC 295. While some have called for him to be stripped of the championship due to his inactivity, Dana White has dismissed such suggestions.
Instead, White has arranged for interim titleholder Tom Aspinall to put his gold on the line against Curtis Blaydes in the co-main event of UFC 304 in Manchester on July 27th. This decision indicates White's faith in Jones' ability to return to action and defend his title in the near future.
As the debate surrounding pound-for-pound rankings rages on, Jon Jones stands firm in his agreement with Dana White's assessment. While Jones awaits his chance to make his first UFC Heavyweight Championship defense, his alignment with the UFC CEO only adds fuel to the ongoing discussion on who truly reigns supreme in the realm of pound-for-pound fighters.
