Cleveland Browns play-by-play announcer, Jim Donovan, has announced his departure from the team after serving as their voice for 25 years. Donovan, who has been battling cancer for several years, shared in a heartfelt letter to Browns fans that his cancer has returned aggressively, necessitating his full focus and commitment to continue the fight.

In his letter, Donovan expressed gratitude for the unwavering support he has received from fans, referring to them as a "huge family." He acknowledged the pride he felt as "The Voice of the Browns" and conveyed his appreciation for the love, prayers, and encouragement he has received throughout his challenging journey.

The announcement of Donovan's departure comes after his retirement from WKYC in June, where he had worked as a sports and news anchor for an impressive 39 years. Upon hearing the news, Micki Byrnes, WKYC Studios president and general manager, expressed the station's sadness and assured Donovan of the support and love from fans in Northeast Ohio.

The Cleveland Browns organization also shared a tribute video honoring Donovan's 25-year tenure as their play-by-play announcer. Managing and Principal Partners, Dee and Jimmy Haslam, commended him as "Cleveland" personified and praised his professionalism, infectious energy, and care for others. They extended their admiration for how Donovan has navigated his fight with cancer and emphasized his immense dedication to his family.

Last fall, Donovan took a temporary leave of absence from WKYC and his announcing duties to undergo treatment for leukemia, which had relapsed. However, he made a triumphant return to the booth, calling the Browns' remarkable journey to the playoffs.

Donovan's battle with cancer began in 2000 when he was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). He endured a decade-long struggle with the disease, culminating in a life-saving bone marrow transplant in 2011. Throughout his career, Donovan showcased his talents beyond the Browns, including play-by-play roles in national events such as the Olympics, World Cup Soccer, and NBC Sports' NFL coverage.

Over the years, Donovan has received numerous accolades, including multiple Emmys, the Cleveland Press Club All-Ohio Best Sportscaster, induction into the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame and the Cleveland Press Club Journalism Hall of Fame, and the Cleveland Sports Awards Lifetime Achievement Award.

As Jim Donovan takes a step back from his role as the voice of the Cleveland Browns, the organization and fans alike rally behind him, offering their support and prayers. His legacy will forever be intertwined with the team, as he leaves behind an indelible impact on the city of Cleveland and the world of sports broadcasting.
