JetBlue has recently increased its checked baggage fees, inciting anger among passengers who criticized the move as a money-hungry decision. The New York-based airline now charges $45 for the first standard-size bag checked within 24 hours of departure, and $60 for a second bag. Customers who pay for their bags at least a day before departure can avail of a $10 discount. The airline updated its website with the new prices without widely communicating the changes, leading to a social media uproar from disgruntled passengers.
The price hike, which went into effect on February 1st, has been met with criticism online, with customers expressing frustration over what they deem as an unfair increase in fees. JetBlue defended the change by stating it was necessary to cover increased costs, including higher fuel prices and inflationary pressures. The airline assured that certain customers, such as Mosaic elite members and Mint business class travelers, will still receive complimentary checked bags, along with JetBlue Plus Cardholders.
In addition to the baggage fee adjustments, JetBlue has introduced other ancillary charges, such as a preferred seating fee and increased prices for "Even More Space" seats. Despite facing financial challenges, JetBlue remains optimistic about its future financial performance, aiming to break even in 2024. The airline's attempt to acquire Spirit Airlines for $3.8 billion was blocked by a federal judge, with both companies now appealing the decision.
JetBlue's move comes shortly after American Airlines announced an increase in baggage fees on domestic and short international flights, aligning with the industry trend of using bag fees as a steady revenue source. American reported raising $1.4 billion in bag fees in 2022, demonstrating the significant impact these charges have on airline revenue.
