In his first NFL game, rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels made a strong impression for the Washington Commanders, wearing a throwback Doug Williams jersey. Though it was just one series, the No. 2 overall pick showed glimpses of his potential as a franchise quarterback in a 20-17 preseason loss to the New York Jets on Saturday.

Daniels wasted no time in showcasing his talent, connecting on a perfectly placed deep pass to record his first NFL completion. The former LSU star then displayed his dual-threat ability by rushing for a touchdown, putting Washington on the scoreboard early in the opening quarter. It was a meaningful moment for Daniels, as he wore Williams' No. 17 jersey to honor the first Black quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl for Washington in 1988.

The young quarterback's performance drew praise from Coach Dan Quinn, who commended Daniels for his command on the field. Quinn also revealed that Daniels took the initiative to check out of a shorter play before throwing a remarkable deep pass to Dyami Brown, gaining 42 yards and keeping the drive alive.

Daniels' impact was not limited to the field, as he found his mother in the stands and tossed her his first touchdown ball, creating a heartwarming moment for both of them. With a smile, Daniels expressed his joy at being able to share that milestone with his mother.

After his impressive showing, Daniels and most of Washington's projected starters were replaced by Marcus Mariota. Daniels finished the game with a 2-of-3 completion rate for 45 yards, including three crucial third-down conversions.

On the Jets' side, rookie quarterback Andrew Peasley stepped in for Tyrod Taylor and connected with Jason Brownlee for a touchdown, helping New York tie the game. Both Peasley and Adrian Martinez, who replaced Peasley in the third quarter, were lauded by Jets coach Robert Saleh for their performances.

While the Jets secured the win with a late field goal, the spotlight remained on Daniels and his promising debut. Washington's upcoming preseason game against Miami on August 17 will provide another opportunity for Daniels to build on his impressive start and further solidify his potential as a franchise quarterback.

Injuries were also a part of the game, with both teams experiencing players leaving the field. Washington will now eagerly await updates on the status of rookie LT Brandon Coleman and quarterback Sam Hartman, who suffered shoulder and pectoral injuries, respectively. Meanwhile, the Jets saw LB Jimmy Ciarlo leave the game with a knee injury.

As the preseason progresses, Daniels' performance will undoubtedly be closely watched by fans and analysts alike, as he aims to secure a significant role in the Commanders' offense.
