**Jason Sudeikis Honors Late Uncle George Wendt at Charity Event**
In a touching tribute, Jason Sudeikis remembered his late uncle, George Wendt, for the first time since his passing, during the Big Slick Celebrity Weekend 2025 fundraiser for Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. Addressing the audience, Sudeikis praised the beloved Cheers actor, highlighting Wendt's genuine warmth and kindness both on and off screen.
Sudeikis spoke fondly of Wendt, noting that the man behind the iconic character Norm Peterson from the sitcom Cheers was just as charming in real life. "He's as fun and kind and as warm as any character he played on television or in films," Sudeikis said, as captured in a video by The Kansas City Star. "There's that old saying of like, 'Don't meet your heroes,' but he's not one of those people," he added, underscoring Wendt's exceptional character.
George Wendt, who passed away on May 20 at the age of 76, was a regular participant at the Big Slick Celebrity Weekend events. Sudeikis acknowledged his uncle’s significant influence on his own career, crediting Wendt for showcasing that acting could be a viable profession and for modeling the ability to find love within the industry, as Wendt did with his wife, Bernadette.
Reflecting on Wendt's legacy, Sudeikis emphasized how his uncle stayed deeply connected to his roots in Chicago and his alma mater, Rockhurst University in Kansas City. Sudeikis humorously mentioned Wendt's frequent visits to a bar named Mike's, which seemed like preparation for his role on Cheers. Sudeikis concluded his heartfelt tribute expressing profound love and saying they miss him greatly.
During the event, Sudeikis wore a jersey bearing Wendt's name and the number 76, the age at which Wendt passed away. Paul Rudd, who shared the stage with Sudeikis, also reflected on Wendt’s absence, recognizing the significant impact he had on the community and their shared events. "It's going to be felt, his absence, this year," Rudd stated.
Wendt had always shown great admiration for his nephew, often praising Sudeikis publicly. On the Still Here Hollywood podcast, Wendt lauded Sudeikis for his achievements and solid character, describing him as "such a great kid" and a "mensch."
Since Wendt's passing, there has been a notable outpouring of love from fans, co-stars, and friends. Cheers cast member John Ratzenberger, who portrayed Cliff Clavin, expressed his heartbreak over Wendt's death, emphasizing the special bond they shared on the show. "For 11 years on Cheers, we shared a stage, a lot of laughs, and a front-row seat to one of television's most beloved friendships," Ratzenberger reminisced, celebrating Wendt's remarkable talent.
The heartfelt tributes from Sudeikis, Rudd, and others encapsulate the profound impact George Wendt had on those around him and the world of entertainment.
