### Jarmo Kekalainen Joins Buffalo Sabres as Senior Advisor

In a significant move, the Buffalo Sabres have brought on Jarmo Kekalainen as their new senior advisor. Reporting directly to General Manager Kevyn Adams, Kekalainen will play a crucial role in shaping the team's hockey operations.

“During our hiring process, it became evident that Jarmo had the ideal blend of experience and expertise to enhance our front office,” said Adams. "With his deep background in scouting, his extensive tenure as an NHL general manager, and his experience at international and European pro levels, he's a fantastic addition."

Kekalainen made history in February 2013 by becoming the first European-born general manager in the NHL when he joined the Columbus Blue Jackets. Under his leadership, the Blue Jackets witnessed their most successful period, including achieving four of the best point totals in the franchise's history. His tenure also saw five of Columbus' six playoff appearances, including their inaugural playoff series victory.

Before his landmark appointment in Columbus, Kekalainen spent three years as the general manager of Jokerit in Finland's top professional league. His resume also includes 15 seasons in various front office roles with the Ottawa Senators and St. Louis Blues. His career began as a scout in 1995-96 with the Senators while simultaneously managing HIFK in Finland’s SM-liiga. By 1999, he was promoted to director of player personnel and later joined the Blues as director of amateur scouting in 2002.

Kekalainen's scouting tenure is noteworthy; during his seven drafts with the Blues, the team selected 32 players who went on to play in the NHL, 12 of whom played at least 500 games. Among these draftees were stars like Lars Eller, Erik Johnson, T.J. Oshie, David Perron, and Alex Pietrangelo, each surpassing 1,000 career NHL games. Additionally, goalies Jake Allen and Ben Bishop, both with over 200 NHL wins, were also drafted under his watch.

Internationally, Kekalainen served as assistant general manager for Team Finland at both the 2014 Winter Olympic Games and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. His efforts contributed to Finland’s bronze medal win at the 2014 Olympics.

Kekalainen’s own playing career saw him engage in 55 NHL games, tallying 13 points. He also played professionally in Finland and Sweden before entering the management side of the sport.

"I'm thrilled to join the Sabres and look forward to contributing to the team’s success," said Kekalainen. "Kevyn and I share a vision on how to build a winning team, and I’m confident that my experience will offer a fresh perspective as we work to improve our roster this offseason."

Kekalainen’s appointment marks a noteworthy addition to the Sabres’ front office, promising to bring a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success.
