In a historic moment for motorsport, Jamie Chadwick, a driver from England, has made history by winning her first career Indy NXT by Firestone pole position for the Grand Prix at Road America. This achievement marks the first time a female driver has earned a pole position on a road or street course in the history of IndyCar's development series.
Chadwick set an impressive lap time of 1m51.0333s in the No. 28 VEXT car of Andretti Global, solidifying her place in the record books. She becomes only the third female driver to secure an Indy NXT pole, with the last being Pippa Mann in October 2010 on the Homestead-Miami Speedway oval.
Expressing her elation, Chadwick said, "I'm so happy. We struggled a little bit this weekend chasing balance. When (teammate) Louis (Foster) did the lap he did, I knew we would have a good car. Track conditions improving, this is our shot in our group, as well. I really thought we could make the most of this opportunity. It's going to be a tough day tomorrow, but I'm confident in what we can do."
This achievement comes as Chadwick's speed continues to accelerate in her second Indy NXT season. She had previously achieved her best starting position of fourth last week on the streets of Detroit.
The qualifying session for the Grand Prix at Road America followed a split-session format used by the series on road and street courses. Chadwick was a part of the second qualifying group, which benefited from the rapidly drying 14-turn, 4.014-mile circuit as rain cleared up about 30 minutes before the session began.
Joining Chadwick on the front row will be her teammate Louis Foster, who secured second place with a lap time of 1m51.0541s in the No. 26 Copart/Novara Technologies car. Foster will be aiming to become the first driver since Linus Lundqvist in 2022 to win three consecutive Indy NXT races.
Josh Pierson achieved his career-best starting position of third with a lap time of 1m51.1621s in the No. 14 HMD Motorsports machine. Previous to this, his best starting position was sixth in May 2023 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.
Championship leader Jacob Abel will start in fourth position with a lap time of 1m51.2702s in the No. 51 Abel Construction entry of Abel Motorsports. Meanwhile, Reece Gold and Caio Collet from HMD Motorsports will occupy the third row, with Gold qualifying fifth and Collet as the top-qualifying rookie in sixth place.
The 20-lap race is scheduled to start at 1:05pm ET on Sunday and will be broadcast live on Peacock, offering fans the opportunity to witness this historic moment in motorsport.
