In a surprising move, Jalen Brunson of the New York Knicks has agreed to a four-year, $156.5 million contract extension, bypassing an extra $113 million that he could have received if he had waited another year. This decision by Brunson is being hailed as the largest financial favor in NBA history, according to Fred Katz of The Athletic.
Brunson's primary motivation for signing the extension was the security it provides, as he opted for a long-term deal to remain with the Knicks. Despite passing on the opportunity for a higher salary, the player expressed his joy and contentment playing in New York. He particularly enjoys the camaraderie with his Villanova friends on the team, the Knicks' potential for championship contention, and playing under the guidance of Coach Tom Thibodeau, who has been instrumental in shaping Brunson's rise as a star player.
Katz emphasizes the significant financial impact of Brunson's decision for the team. In a league where most contenders are constrained by salary concerns, the Knicks now have their best player signed to a favorable and cost-effective contract until at least 2028, with a player option for the final season. A league insider revealed to Katz that Brunson's new contract includes a 15% trade kicker.
The Knicks' financial situation looks even more promising with the addition of Miles Bridges, who is also on a team-friendly contract earning $23.3 million and $24.9 million over the next two seasons. This puts the Knicks in a position to strengthen their roster without worrying about breaching the second apron of the league's salary cap rules.
Katz points out that when Brunson's new contract takes effect in the 2025/26 season, the combined salaries of Brunson, Bridges, Josh Hart, OG Anunoby, Mitchell Robinson, Donte DiVincenzo, Miles McBride, Pacome Dadiet, and Tyler Kolek will amount to $153.2 million. This leaves the Knicks comfortably below the projected $207.8 million second apron.
Meanwhile, the Knicks are showing interest in re-signing Precious Achiuwa as the primary backup to Mitchell Robinson. Achiuwa, who played a significant role after his acquisition from the Toronto Raptors last season, appeared in 49 games and contributed in the playoffs.
Additionally, the Knicks are exploring trades for high-salaried veterans, as they aim to further bolster their roster. The team is actively considering various options to solidify their depth.
In the summer league, Tyler Kolek, the Knicks' second-round pick, made an impressive debut with seven points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Kolek's performance has put him in the running for rotation minutes as a backup to Brunson. The young player expressed his dedication to fulfill any role assigned by Coach Thibodeau, highlighting his work ethic and commitment to improving his game.
With Brunson's contract extension and a promising roster, the New York Knicks are poised to make a strong impact in the upcoming seasons, both on the court and in their financial management.
