Former star edge defender and CBS Sports personality J.J. Watt has expressed his willingness to return and play for his original team, the Houston Texans, under the right circumstances. Watt, who retired at the end of the 2022 season, recently revealed that he would make himself available to the Texans if needed, but this opportunity will only extend to the 2024 season.

The 35-year-old NFL veteran was a first-round pick of the Texans in 2011 and spent 10 successful seasons in Houston, building a Hall-of-Fame-worthy resume despite facing a few injury setbacks. After his time with the Texans, Watt spent two years with the Arizona Cardinals before officially retiring.

Watt made his commitment known to DeMeco Ryans, the Texans' current head coach. During a charity softball game, he stated, "I told DeMeco last year, I said, 'Don't call unless you absolutely need it, but if you ever do call, I'll be there.' And he knows not to call unless he absolutely needs it. This is the last year I'll tell him that, because I'm not going to keep training the way I've been training, but he knows that if he ever truly does need it, I'll be there for him. I don't anticipate that happening - they've got a very good group."

While there are no apparent indications that Watt will be required to make a return, his offer to play for the Texans showcases his loyalty and readiness to contribute. The Texans had a surprising run in 2023, led by rookie head coach DeMeco Ryans and quarterback C.J. Stroud, reaching the divisional round of the AFC playoffs. The team has also made notable additions to their defensive front during the offseason, including four-time Pro Bowler Danielle Hunter.

Although Watt acknowledges the talented group already in place, his comments suggest that he has maintained his football shape. In his final year with the Cardinals in 2022, he started in all 16 games and recorded an impressive 12.5 sacks. If circumstances arise where Ryans requires additional pass rushers during the season, having Watt as an option could prove invaluable.

Overall, while it is unlikely that the Texans will need to call upon their former star, J.J. Watt remains a notable "ace in the hole" for the team. His commitment to returning to the field for his original team demonstrates his dedication and love for the game, even as he looks towards the next phase of his career.
