### Tragedy Strikes as Young Ski Champion Matilde Lorenzi Dies in Training Accident

Italy's skiing community is in mourning after the tragic death of 19-year-old champion skier Matilde Lorenzi. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) confirmed Lorenzi's passing on Tuesday, attributing her death to severe injuries sustained during a training accident.

On Monday, while training on the Schnalstal Glacier, Lorenzi suffered a fatal fall on the Grawand G1 slope in Val Senales. She hit her head on the hard piste, resulting in a traumatic brain injury. Despite being swiftly airlifted to a hospital in nearby Bolzano, Lorenzi's injuries proved insurmountable.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Matilde Lorenzi," FIS stated. "We join the Italian Winter Sports Federation President Flavio Roda and the entire Italian winter sports community in mourning her loss, along with her coaches, teammates, and all associated staff."

The accident was particularly heart-wrenching as Lorenzi was not only a promising young athlete but also a dedicated sports soldier financed by the Italian National Defense Ministry. Her untimely death was formally announced by the Ministry shortly after her passing.

Renowned gold-medal skier Lindsey Vonn expressed her condolences on Instagram, stating, "This is a tragic loss. Sending my thoughts to her family."

Lorenzi hailed from Villarbasse in the Metropolitan City of Turin and kicked off her professional career at a junior race in Santa Caterina Valfurva in 2020. Throughout her budding career, she participated primarily in FIS races across Italy. Her prowess was most recently recognized when she was crowned the Italian champion in the Super-G league following the 2023-24 season. Additionally, she twice ranked among the top 15 in the European Cup.

"FISI is in mourning, standing by her family, friends, and everyone who cherished Matilde, honoring her memory today and always," concluded the FIS in their heartfelt statement.
