Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has drawn a connection between Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine two years ago and the subsequent attack by Hamas militants on Israel last October. Meloni emphasized in an interview published on February 24, 2024, that the invasion of Ukraine had a significant impact beyond its immediate region.
According to Meloni, the attack by Hamas on October 7 resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people in Israel and the kidnapping of 250 others. She suggested that this escalation of violence was a direct consequence of Russia's violation of international law during its invasion of Ukraine. Meloni highlighted the need to restore international legality in Ukraine to prevent the proliferation of conflicts around the world.
As she arrived in Kyiv to mark the second anniversary of the invasion, Meloni expressed her support for a two-state solution in the Israel-Palestine conflict, emphasizing that it is in the interest of both parties involved. She stated that the repercussions of unlawful actions by permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, such as the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, can have far-reaching consequences globally, extending from the Middle East to the Balkans and even Africa.
