Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed uncertainty on Sunday regarding the duration of a potential Gaza cease-fire and hostage swap deal. Despite ongoing talks involving the U.S., Israel, Egypt, and Qatar, Netanyahu acknowledged the collective effort to secure the release of hostages, with a proposed deal including the exchange of up to 40 women and older hostages for around 300 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
The negotiations aim to implement a six-week pause in fighting, allowing for the entry of aid trucks into Gaza, particularly in the northern region. With a target deadline before the start of Ramadan on March 10, U.S. national security advisor Jake Sullivan noted that progress had been made on the basic parameters of the deal, with further discussions to involve Hamas for their agreement on releasing the hostages.
Netanyahu expressed determination for a resolution, emphasizing the need to eliminate Hamas to achieve victory, even hinting at expanded operations in Rafah in the coming weeks. While President Joe Biden has not been briefed on Israel's plan for Rafah, there are concerns about protecting civilians during potential military actions.
Amid heightened tensions, the Health Ministry in Gaza reported significant casualties, with over 29,500 Palestinians killed and nearly 70,000 wounded since the conflict began following Hamas' incursion into southern Israel. The ministry highlighted the disproportionate impact on women and children, while Israel claims to have targeted thousands of Hamas fighters.
