IO Interactive, the developer renowned for the hit Hitman series, has finally provided a glimpse of its highly anticipated James Bond game. Initially announced in November 2020, the game, now officially titled "007 First Light," was showcased with a new narrative-focused trailer during Sony's summer State of Play event on June 4.
The first trailer for "007 First Light" delves into the early moments of this new incarnation of Bond, including his training in the Navy. This approach marks a distinct departure from many previous Bond games, which often adhered closely to existing film plots or visual depictions, such as the adaptation of "GoldenEye 007" or the incorporation of Pierce Brosnan's likeness in "James Bond 007: NightFire." Instead, IO Interactive chose a fresh direction by crafting an original origin story and an entirely new version of the iconic character not based on any film.
Given IO Interactive's expertise with the Hitman series, known for its 007-esque gameplay elements like disguises, infiltration, and gadget usage, the developer seems like a natural fit for this ambitious project. "007 First Light" will retain these gameplay mechanics while presenting a unique narrative experience.
The future of the James Bond film franchise remains uncertain, with creative control recently transitioning to Amazon MGM Studios and producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman. Longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson handed over the reins in March 2025, and there has been no announcement regarding the next film or a new actor to portray Bond after Daniel Craig's tenure.
Fans of the franchise can look forward to "007 First Light" launching on the Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in 2026. The game promises to offer a fresh and exciting perspective on the legendary spy's early career, setting the stage for a potentially groundbreaking addition to the James Bond gaming legacy.
