When Angela Craig fell into a coma on March 15, 2023, in Aurora, Colorado, law enforcement officials wasted no time assigning a homicide detective to investigate her case - even while she was still alive. Shockingly, within hours after Angela Craig was pronounced dead, her husband, Dr. James Craig, was apprehended and charged with her murder. Despite the charges, James Craig maintains his plea of not guilty.
The perplexing saga surrounding the alleged murder of Angela Craig and the swift arrest of her husband can be traced back to a package that arrived at James Craig's dental office merely five days before Angela Craig's untimely demise. The enigmatic events unfolded in "Who Poisoned Angela Craig?" - a new episode of "48 Hours" set to air on Saturday, March 23 at 10/9c on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
Angela and James Craig tied the knot in 1999 and settled in Aurora, where they raised their six children. Deeply involved in their community, the couple dedicated their lives to their church, their children, and James Craig's renowned dental practice, Summerbrook Dental.
Steffan Tubbs, a former radio host and podcaster, crossed paths with James Craig when he sought dental treatment at Summerbrook Dental. Tubbs was astonished when news broke in March 2023 of Dr. Craig's arrest for Angela's murder. He recalled, "I couldn't believe the allegations... I couldn't believe the mugshot. There's my dentist. A mugshot."
Tubbs promptly covered James Craig's arrest on his radio show and swiftly launched a podcast delving into the purported facts of the case. Through his podcast, Tubbs meticulously examined the 52-page arrest warrant released by the police when they formally charged James Craig with murder. Tubbs remarked, "In my nearly 34 years as a newsman, this is the most unbelievable and exhaustive arrest affidavit I have ever read."
Although Tubbs initially knew James Craig as his dentist, their professional association deepened when Tubbs worked on radio advertisements for Summerbrook Dental at his former radio station. Tubbs also crossed paths with Angela Craig during those meetings and was struck by her vibrant energy and intelligence. He recalled her active participation in discussions surrounding the dental practice's marketing and message, appreciating their seemingly flourishing family enterprise in Colorado.
At the age of 43, Angela Craig tragically lost her life, leaving behind her six children and James Craig. Friends and former colleagues informed "48 Hours" that Angela had appeared content and in good health. According to the arrest warrant, James and Angela Craig were known for their morning workouts, including James preparing a protein shake for Angela as part of their daily routine.
Angela Craig's medical struggles began on March 6, 2023, when she started feeling unwell. In a text message to her husband that morning, she expressed, "I don't feel right in my head." James Craig inquired if he should come home, to which Angela Craig responded, "No... this is just weird. I'm dizzy in my head and my eyes are working slowly, and my body is responding slowly."
The warrant documents that James Craig asked, "Do you get lightheaded when you stand up?" Angela Craig replied, "It feels more like I feel when I take heavy meds, and everything adjusts and moves slowly. Like I'm moving in thick gel. My eyes are struggling to stay focused." Later, she texted her husband, "I feel drugged," prompting him to return home and accompany her to the emergency room (ER).
Angela Craig was discharged from the ER that same day but found herself readmitted three days later. Despite undergoing a series of tests and treatments, doctors remained baffled by her condition. During this second hospitalization, a crucial incident occurred at Summerbrook Dental, solidifying it as a critical piece of evidence in the ensuing murder investigation.
According to the warrant, James Craig informed his office manager of an expected "personal package" and emphasized not to open it. On March 13, while Angela Craig was still in the hospital, an unsuspecting staff member unknowingly opened the package. The office manager, aware of James Craig's instructions, resealed the box after discovering a canister labeled "potassium cyanide." Subsequently, police state that the package was directly handed to James Craig.
Angela Craig was discharged from her second hospital visit on March 14, seemingly in good condition. Unfortunately, her respite was short-lived as she was rushed back to the hospital the next morning, significantly deteriorating. Regrettably, she would not survive.
Authorities reported that James Craig arrived at the hospital soon after Angela Craig but did not stay long. The warrant details that he left briefly, returning approximately an hour and a half later with food. James then entered Angela Craig's room alone, and shortly thereafter, she experienced a seizure, resulting in a plummet in her vital signs.
During this critical period, James Craig photographed his wife's condition and promptly shared the distressing images and updates with their close friend, Michelle Redfearn, a trained nurse married to Ryan Redfearn, James Craig's business partner and dental school comrade. Alarmed by the photos and James Craig's texts, which revealed, "crash. intubated. doc says she's 'very very worried,'" the Redfearns hurried to the hospital.
While en route, Ryan Redfearn received a phone call from the office, alerting him about the package marked "potassium cyanide" that a colleague claimed had been delivered and opened. The employee, concerned upon discovering that Angela's symptoms aligned with those of cyanide poisoning, contacted the authorities.
Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Ryan Redfearn privately approached a nurse, sharing the story of the package allegedly marked for potassium cyanide, prompting the nurse, a mandatory reporter, to notify the police. Consequently, members of the Aurora Police Department's homicide unit swiftly launched an investigation. Angela Craig remained on life support, and the probability of her survival was grim.
Later that day, Ryan Redfearn and Michelle Redfearn received a phone call from James Craig. Ryan recounted that James inquired if he had spoken to the police. Ryan confirmed that he had, relaying the information regarding the package marked "potassium cyanide." According to the warrant, James Craig then asserted that the package contained a ring intended for Angela. Ryan Redfearn, unconvinced by James Craig's explanation, admonished him to cease talking and seek legal counsel.
The next morning, James Craig sent Ryan Redfearn an extensive text, imploring him not to speak to anyone, including law enforcement officers. James cautioned that Ryan's continued involvement would inflict further harm upon his family unless he received a subpoena. In an interview, former Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler expressed skepticism towards James Craig's plea, remarking that innocent scenarios for instructing someone not to speak to the police were difficult to fathom.
Currently, as James Craig awaits trial, the defense has yet to present its case before a jury. During a preliminary hearing in July 2023, Craig's attorney revealed his struggles with depression in the past, highlighting his engagement in counseling sessions. Utah-based defense attorney Skye Lazaro, while not involved in this case, has worked on other poison-related cases and reviewed the available records. Lazaro suggested that James Craig's defense might argue that he sought poison not to harm Angela, but rather to end his own life. Furthermore, Lazaro speculated that the defense may assert that James Craig's arrest was hastily carried out, alleging that the police failed to explore alternative theories surrounding Angela Craig's death, including the possibility of suicide attempts by either Angela or James.
During the preliminary hearing, the defense underscored that no evidence of poison had been found in materials tested, such as bottles and syringes from the Craig's residence. James Craig's trial for murder is scheduled to commence on August 8, 2024. Jurors will have the opportunity to learn how a fortuitous discovery at Summerbrook Dental triggered a murder investigation and ultimately led to James Craig's arrest. Brauchler credited Ryan Redfearn's actions and the information conveyed to the nurse that day, stating, "That is a testament to Ryan Redfearn."
