Leadership at a Catholic boarding school for Native youths in southeastern Montana, serving the Crow and Northern Cheyenne reservations, conducted a 16-month investigation to determine if unmarked graves might exist on their properties following the discovery of children's remains at residential schools in Canada in 2021. The investigation revealed that between 1884 and 1960, at least 113 students died while enrolled in institutions operated by the St. Labre Indian School Educational Association. The report, shared with NCR, highlighted that disease and illness were responsible for 90% of student deaths, with overcrowding, poor sanitation practices, and limited access to medical care contributing to the fatalities. The commission involved Indigenous individuals to ensure a thorough and sensitive investigation, providing closure to families by compiling and publishing information on the children who died during that time period. Bishop Jeffrey Fleming of the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings expressed a commitment to reconciliation and healing after the findings were made public.
