In-N-Out Burger's plans for a new location in Washington County have taken an unexpected turn, as their previously denied application has now been conditionally approved. The iconic fast-food chain faced zoning complications that prohibited a drive-thru on a portion of the intended site, prompting the initial denial in 2022. However, an update from Washington County reveals that the location at 10565 S.W. Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway in unincorporated Washington County is now back on the table.
While In-N-Out's conditional approval on April 16 is seen as a positive development, concerns about increased traffic in the neighborhood have been raised. Many residents worry about the impact a new In-N-Out Burger would have on the already congested area.
The approval process included several steps. In addition to the conditional approval for development, a special use permit, development review, and property line adjustment were also greenlit. However, before construction can begin, In-N-Out will need to submit various other permits required by the county.
According to Washington County, the public comment period has ended, but parties of record have until May 7 to appeal the decision to the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals. This indicates that there may still be an opportunity for concerned residents to voice their objections.
In a statement, Mike Abbate, In-N-Out's vice president of store development, expressed appreciation for the chance to serve customers in Beaverton and the surrounding area with this new location. He outlined the expected timeline for the project, stating that once ground is broken, it typically takes In-N-Out 8 to 9 months to complete construction and open for business.
If all goes as planned, the Washington County location will become In-N-Out's fourth restaurant in Oregon, expanding the influence of the famous California-based burger chain. The company is also reportedly working on another location in Ridgefield, Washington.
As the development process continues, concerns about traffic impact and community involvement may further shape the fate of In-N-Out's proposed Washington County location. Residents and stakeholders alike will be closely monitoring the progress and any potential appeals in the coming weeks.
