In response to a recent recall, the Illinois Department of Public Health is urging residents to check their eclipse glasses for safety. The recalled glasses, sold on Amazon under the name "Biniki Solar Eclipse Glasses AAS Approved 2024 - CE & ISO Certified Safe Shades for Direct Sun Viewing (6 Packs)," have raised concerns due to their inadequate safety standards.
The recalled glasses are labeled as "EN ISO 12312-1:2022," which does not meet the necessary safety requirements. Proper safety glasses should carry the ISO designation of 12312-2. These glasses were sold in several retailers across Southern Illinois, including Farm Fresh Market in Breese and Steelville Marketplace.
Although the glasses are advertised as the "#1 Best Seller in Women's Eyeglass Cases" on the Amazon listing, they have not been listed on Amazon's official recall page as of Monday. However, retailers in Illinois have taken to social media to warn customers about the recall and offer returns.
Farm Fresh Market in Breese, Illinois, posted a warning on Facebook, informing customers about the recall and assuring them that they can return the glasses to the store. Similarly, Steelville Marketplace posted a notice stating that they received notification about the recall and urged customers to return their purchased eclipse glasses for a full refund.
These recalls come at a crucial time, with the eagerly awaited solar eclipse just around the corner. It is vital that residents prioritize their safety and invest in properly certified eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 standards. Ensuring proper eye protection is crucial to protect against potential damage caused by direct sun viewing during the eclipse.
The Illinois Department of Public Health advises residents to double-check the ISO certification on their eclipse glasses and warns against using any that do not meet the appropriate safety standards. As the eclipse draws nearer, it is essential to stay informed and take the necessary precautions to enjoy this natural phenomenon safely.
In case of any uncertainty regarding the safety of eclipse glasses purchased online or in-store, residents are encouraged to contact the Illinois Department of Public Health for further guidance.
