Hyundai Unveils Upgrades for the Ioniq 5 in 2025 Model Year
Hyundai is set to release an updated version of its popular electric vehicle, the Ioniq 5, in the 2025 model year (MY25). With several notable enhancements, the MY25 Ioniq 5 is expected to further solidify the car's reputation as a top choice among electric vehicle enthusiasts.
One of the major updates is the inclusion of J3400 ports concealed underneath the charger port flaps. Formerly known as the North American Charging Standard (NACS), this Tesla-style charger plug will allow the MY25 Ioniq 5s to fast charge at over 17,000 Tesla Superchargers across the United States and Canada. However, an adapter will be required to charge the car with a CCS1 charger, although Hyundai will provide this dongle with new purchases. Existing Hyundai EVs with CCS1 ports can expect J3400 adapters to be available in early 2025.
In addition, Ioniq 5s manufactured at Hyundai's new plant in Georgia will qualify for the IRS clean vehicle tax credit. Initially, US-made Ioniq 5s and other EVs from the Georgia factory are expected to be eligible for at least $3,750 in tax credits, providing a financial incentive for buyers. Leased Ioniq 5s will qualify for the full $7,500 tax credit.
The MY25 Ioniq 5 will also receive a boost in battery capacity. The standard-range model will increase from 58 kWh to 63 kWh, extending its range by 20 miles to 240 miles. Meanwhile, the long-range models will see a capacity increase from 77.4 kWh to 84 kWh, providing an additional seven miles of range. The longest-range Ioniq 5 will now be able to travel 310 miles on a single charge.
Hyundai has also introduced the Ioniq 5 XRT, an off-road-focused variant of the popular electric vehicle. The XRT features a lifted suspension with a 0.9-inch (23 mm) lift, all-wheel drive, new 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, and a rugged black exterior trim. This variant is set to compete with rivals like Rivian in the off-road electric vehicle market.
Furthermore, all MY25 Ioniq 5s, except for the high-performance Ioniq 5 N, will receive interior and exterior tweaks. These include new front and rear bumpers, a redesigned center console and climate control panel, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and various new safety-focused driver assists.
Pricing details for the refreshed Ioniq 5 lineup are expected to be announced closer to the cars' arrival at dealerships. With its improved charging capabilities, enhanced battery range, and the introduction of the rugged XRT variant, the MY25 Ioniq 5 is set to continue impressing electric vehicle enthusiasts and potentially increase Hyundai's market share in the EV segment.
