In a powerful show of solidarity, organizers, artists, and film workers in collaboration with various advocacy groups are set to lead a Free Palestine march in Los Angeles tomorrow ahead of the 2024 Oscars. With the aim of demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the protesters are determined to amplify their message: "No awards during a genocide!"
The march, organized by groups such as Writers Against the War on Gaza LA (WAWOG), Film Workers for Palestine, and SAG-AFTRA for Ceasefire, is expected to draw hundreds of participants. The organizers have planned a series of actions, including rallying, marching, blockading, and disruptive activities, all in the name of bringing attention to the ongoing crisis in Palestine.
The protesters also demand an end to what they describe as "the blockade of Gaza and the occupation of Palestine." Film Workers for Palestine, in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace's L.A. chapter, has shared a statement on Instagram calling on people to gather at the Cinerama Dome on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT to join the march.
In a social media post, Film Workers for Palestine stated, "We will not be distracted by the entertainment industry. We WILL continue to call for a permanent ceasefire and Palestinian liberation. Let's mobilize and take the streets to show that we refuse to look away from this ongoing genocide! Ceasefire NOW!"
It is worth noting that Sunday not only marks the Academy Awards but also the start of Ramadan, a significant holiday for the majority of Gazans. Tragically, it is also the day Israel is scheduled to launch its ground invasion of Rafah, a small city in the southern Gaza Strip where over a million Palestinians are seeking shelter.
This announcement follows a recent Israel-Hamas War protest that took place outside the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica on February 25. During the protest, demonstrators played previously recorded chants through a megaphone, including phrases like "free Palestine," "Long live Palestine," and "ceasefire now."
As tensions continue to escalate in the region, the Free Palestine march in Los Angeles serves as a reminder that the pursuit of justice and peace transcends mere awards and entertainment. The calls for a halt to the violence, the lifting of the blockade, and the liberation of Palestine remain at the forefront of this impassioned movement.
