A group of House Republicans is leading a bold but unlikely campaign to rename the largest airport in the Washington, D.C.-area after former President Donald Trump. The proposed legislation, known as H.R. 7845, aims to designate the Washington Dulles International Airport as the "Donald J. Trump International Airport."
Currently named after John Foster Dulles, who served as Secretary of State under former President Dwight Eisenhower during the Cold War, the airport is a major transport hub for the D.C. metropolitan area. The region's other major airport is already named after former President Ronald Reagan.
Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, a Pennsylvania Republican and the majority chief deputy whip, introduced the bill on Friday. It has gained support from six GOP co-sponsors, including Reps. Michael Waltz of Florida, Andy Ogles of Tennessee, Charles Fleischmann of Tennessee, Paul Gosar of Arizona, Barry Moore of Alabama, and Troy Nehls of Texas.
Reschenthaler expressed his belief in the greatness of the nation under President Trump's leadership, stating that renaming the airport would be a fitting symbol of freedom, prosperity, and strength for millions of domestic and international travelers.
However, the effort faces significant obstacles. With a Democrat-controlled Senate and slim majority in the GOP-controlled House, the bill is unlikely to gain traction in Congress. The House Republican majority has also diminished in recent months due to resignations, making it challenging to secure unanimous support for partisan legislation amidst internal divisions.
Reacting to the proposal, Rep. Gerry Connolly, a Virginia Democrat representing one of the airport's districts, sarcastically suggested that if Republicans wanted to name something after Trump, they should consider a federal prison, alluding to the former president's felony charges. Rep. Jennifer Wexton, another Virginia Democrat representing the other district the airport falls within, criticized House Republicans for prioritizing symbolic gestures instead of addressing pressing issues.
While the idea of renaming Washington Dulles International Airport after Donald Trump may resonate with some House Republicans, the bill's prospects appear slim in a divided Congress. The debate surrounding this proposal highlights the ongoing division and challenges facing lawmakers as they navigate the political landscape.
