In a recent announcement, Larian Studios confirmed that it will not be developing Baldur's Gate 4, signaling an end to their involvement with the franchise. The news was revealed by Director Swen Vincke during the Game Developers Conference (GDC).
Following this revelation, Hasbro, the parent company of Wizards of the Coast, expressed their appreciation for Larian Studios as an "incredible partner." In a statement to IGN, a Hasbro spokesperson stated, "Larian has been an incredible partner, and together we are proud of the success of Baldur's Gate 3."
Despite Larian's departure from the franchise, there were no specific details provided by Hasbro regarding the future of Baldur's Gate. The company remained tight-lipped about whether Wizards of the Coast plans to seek a new developer for the series.
Baldur's Gate 3, developed by Larian Studios, has proven to be a lucrative venture for Hasbro, generating a staggering $90 million in revenue. This success comes at a crucial time for the company, as it has faced a 15 percent decline in overall revenue and operated at a loss of $1.5 billion in 2023.
Last year, Wizards of the Coast cancelled five Dungeons & Dragons games that were in development, including an internal project called "Jabberwocky." It was also revealed that Starbreeze is currently working on an untitled D&D game codenamed Project Baxter, utilizing Unreal Engine 5, which is slated for release in 2026.
In light of Larian Studios' departure, focus now turns to Baldur's Gate 3, which is still actively being developed. The game is set to introduce additional evil endings along with other exciting content. Director Swen Vincke will be sharing more insights about the game in an upcoming interview.
As the fate of Baldur's Gate hangs in the balance, fans of the franchise eagerly await further announcements from Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast. Meanwhile, Wizards of the Coast has recently unveiled plans for Dungeons & Dragons' upcoming 50th anniversary celebration.
Ultimately, the future of Baldur's Gate remains uncertain, but Hasbro's mention of "awesome D&D games" in the works is likely to create anticipation among fans. Stay tuned for more updates on the beloved franchise and its journey beyond Larian Studios.
