In a shocking turn of events, 23-year-old Cat Holden, an assistant underwriter from Ingatestone, Essex, has been thrown into a life-altering battle with cancer. What began as a twinge in her left shoulder while rock climbing during a family vacation in Great Yarmouth back in March 2023 has now led to the discovery of an avocado-sized malignant tumor in her shoulder joint.

Holden initially brushed off the pain, believing it to be a minor muscle injury. However, as the months passed, the pain persisted and even intensified. By August, while swimming in Bracklesham Bay, West Sussex, Holden could hardly keep her head above water due to the discomfort. A doctor diagnosed her with tendonitis and suggested rest and ibuprofen as treatment.

As the pain worsened, Holden decided to seek physiotherapy before embarking on a dream trip to Australia. However, even during her adventures, she realized that something was seriously wrong as her shoulder went from aching to throbbing. Upon her return home in mid-November, she found herself unable to lift her left shoulder and noticed a pulsating sensation. Even her physiotherapist observed a loss of strength in her arm.

Concerned about her worsening condition, Holden visited a shoulder specialist on January 5. The consultation took a grim turn when the consultant revealed the presence of a rare tumor in her shoulder. Subsequent exploratory surgery and a biopsy confirmed that Holden was facing a malignant giant cell tumor.

Without delay, she commenced chemotherapy, a grueling treatment that she continues to endure. The process has taken a toll on Holden's physical appearance, resulting in hair loss, including eyebrows and eyelashes. Additionally, she now experiences tinnitus, a persistent ringing in her ears.

Holden, who describes herself as a "self-professed It girl," is struggling to recognize the reflection staring back at her in the mirror. Weight loss and extreme fatigue have further contributed to her changing appearance. Chemotherapy has unleashed a barrage of side effects, including nausea, sickness, diarrhea, and painful mouth sores.

Among her worries, Holden is concerned about her future fertility. In a proactive move, she took the decision to freeze her eggs in March. Presently, she is bracing herself for her fifth round of chemotherapy, with a total of 18 sessions planned. Furthermore, Holden is preparing for a life-altering surgery scheduled for June 11, where her shoulder will be removed and replaced with metal. This operation may result in lifelong mobility issues.

Reflecting on her journey, Holden describes the moment of diagnosis as a turning point in her life. Her carefree existence was shattered as she was confronted with a reality she never thought she would face at such a young age. Devastated by the news that she will never regain full function of her shoulder, Holden admits that the trauma of her experience will remain with her forever. Nevertheless, she remains determined to appreciate life to its fullest once she emerges from this difficult chapter.
