Guests at Iceland's renowned Blue Lagoon resort were forced to evacuate over the weekend as a volcanic eruption unfolded, sending lava towards the nearby coastal town of Grindavík. The eruption, which commenced with little warning on Saturday night between Mt. Hagafell and Mt. Stóra Skógfell, swiftly crossed the road Grindavíkurvegur a few hours after its onset.

Simone Werner and her companion had been enjoying the thermal baths of the Blue Lagoon resort for several hours prior to the eruption. Just as they were preparing to depart, they were startled by the sight of the volcano in action, triggering a scene of terror as they hastily drove away from the area.

"I look to my right, and my friend just screamed at the top of her lungs, and there were just these plumes of red smoke coming out of this mountain," Werner recounted. "There were fountains of lava, and it was terrifying."

Following the eruption, the Blue Lagoon resort was immediately evacuated and closed until further notice. Werner and her friend were already in the process of leaving when the evacuation began, with alarms sounding in the background. They found themselves part of a procession of cars, all striving to distance themselves as much as possible from the encroaching lava.

Videos captured by tourists at the Blue Lagoon resort showcase the moment the volcano erupted, marking the fourth volcanic activity in the region within a span of three months. The videos also captured the wailing sirens in the background, serving as a warning for people to swiftly evacuate the area.

Approximately 20 minutes into their drive, Werner noticed that people surrounding them seemed unfazed by the unfolding volcanic eruption. "Everyone was just eating dinner and seemed to be acting pretty normally," she remarked. "But for us, we were completely panicked."

Although aware of the potential volcanic activity before their visit, Werner and her friend had hoped that it would not occur during their stay. They had managed to enjoy the natural beauty and relaxation of the Blue Lagoon before chaos ensued.

Reflecting on the experience, Werner expressed a desire to return to the Blue Lagoon someday, although preferably when the volcano remains inactive. The eruption serves as a sobering reminder of the untamed forces of nature and the need for caution and preparedness when exploring areas prone to volcanic activity.

As the volcanic eruption continues, authorities will continue to monitor the situation, ensuring the safety of residents and visitors alike. The ongoing closure of the Blue Lagoon resort serves as a necessary precaution as the landscape transforms amidst the volcanic event.
