The Cleveland Guardians are set to bolster their roster with the acquisition of outfielder Lane Thomas from the Washington Nationals. According to a source disclosed to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand on Monday, the trade will see the Guardians sending three prospects to the Nationals in exchange for Thomas.
The prospects involved in the trade include left-hander Alex Clemmey, the Guardians' No. 8 prospect, shortstop Rafael Ramirez Jr., ranked No. 22 in the Guardians' system, and third baseman José Tena. While the teams have not officially confirmed the trade, it marks a significant move for both organizations.
Thomas, who turns 29 on Aug. 23, emerged as a key player for the Nationals in the 2021 season following his acquisition from the St. Louis Cardinals. The outfielder enjoyed a breakout season in 2023, posting career-high numbers across various categories, including a team-best 28 home runs, 101 runs, and 20 stolen bases.
Despite his solid performance, the Nationals' depth in outfield talent, including top prospects like Dylan Crews and James Wood, allowed them to entertain trade offers for Thomas. With Thomas not set to become a free agent until 2026, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo expressed the team's intention to secure a significant return for the outfielder.
Rizzo had praised Thomas, highlighting his defensive skills, power at the plate, and versatility against different types of pitching. As the Guardians look to integrate Thomas into their lineup, the trade represents a strategic move for both teams as they position themselves for success in the upcoming seasons.
