A group called Recall Vos has taken steps to oust the Republican speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly, Robin Vos, citing his handling of former President Donald Trump's defeat in the 2020 election. The group submitted over 10,700 signatures on Monday, surpassing the required number of approximately 7,000 signatures from voters in Vos' district.

Recall leader Matt Snorek expressed the sentiment of the people of Racine County, stating that with the significant number of signatures on the recall petition, it was clear that they were tired of the status quo and demanded new representation.

Speaker Vos, however, has cast doubt on the validity of the signatures and criticized the recall effort, considering it a waste of time during a critical election year. Trump supporters have been targeting Vos since the 2020 election, where the former president narrowly lost Wisconsin. Despite launching an investigation into the results, Vos refused to succumb to Trump's pressure to overturn the outcome, deeming it impossible and unconstitutional. There has been no evidence of widespread fraud in the election, and President Biden's victory remains.

Furthermore, Vos faced a primary challenge backed by Trump in 2022, ultimately prevailing by a slim margin. In January, Snorek filed the recall petition, accusing Vos of obstructing fair elections, and referred to a comment made by Vos in December 2022, where he stated he would "try as hard as I can to make sure Donald Trump is not the nominee" in 2024. Vos has since clarified that he will vote for Trump, who is now the likely nominee, in November.

Vos released a statement on Sunday, expressing his disappointment with the recall campaign, calling it a waste of resources and effort by a group of individuals who did not accept the outcome of the 2020 election. He pledged to assemble a team to evaluate each individual signature submitted.

Under Wisconsin law, the recall organizers must collect signatures equal to at least 25 percent of the most recent gubernatorial vote in the district. Once the signatures are submitted, Vos has 10 days to challenge them. The Wisconsin Elections Commission, a bipartisan six-member panel, will ultimately determine the sufficiency of the petition and decide whether to call for a recall election. The commission is set to discuss the recall petition at a special meeting scheduled for Tuesday.

Vos, who has served as the speaker since 2013, holds the record for the longest-serving speaker in Wisconsin's history. Representing a district in southeastern Wisconsin, south of Milwaukee, Vos's political future now hangs in the balance as the recall process unfolds.
