In an exciting turn of events, the highly anticipated Green Lantern TV series, titled "Lanterns," has officially received a series order from HBO. The redeveloped adaptation of the popular Green Lantern comic will be brought to life by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King.
"Lanterns" will focus on the story of John Stewart, a new recruit, and Hal Jordan, a legend in the Lantern universe. The two intergalactic cops find themselves entangled in a dark and mysterious murder investigation in the heartland of America. This unique Earth-based mystery promises to captivate audiences and bring an engaging twist to the Green Lantern narrative.
The journey to get a Green Lantern series on screens has been a long one. Originally announced in 2019 under the guidance of Greg Berlanti, the project underwent changes in October 2022. Initially centered around characters Guy Gardner and Alan Scott, the roles were set to be played by Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine, respectively.
However, DC Studios co-head James Gunn revealed in May that the show's direction had been completely reimagined. With the talents of Damon Lindelof, known for his work on "Watchmen," Chris Mundy from "Ozark," and acclaimed comic book writer Tom King, the new iteration of "Lanterns" is set to explore fresh perspectives.
The eight-part series, produced by Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, will see Chris Mundy take on the role of showrunner. Lindelof and King will co-write the series, with all three serving as executive producers. The revamped vision for "Lanterns" is expected to be a foundational part of the unified DC Universe, set to launch next summer with the upcoming Superman project.
Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, expressed excitement at the reunion with Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof, commenting on their partnership with Tom King to bring this fresh take on DC's Green Lantern to life. Meanwhile, James Gunn and Peter Safran, Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs of DC Studios, conveyed their enthusiasm in collaborating with Mundy, Lindelof, and King, promising an original detective story that will showcase the complexity of characters like John Stewart and Hal Jordan.
Fans of the Green Lantern comics can look forward to the arrival of "Lanterns" on HBO, as it promises to shed new light on the beloved characters and immerse viewers in a compelling and thrilling intergalactic adventure.
