Google Home is set to elevate its status as a premier smart home platform with a significant fall update. Spanning a variety of devices including Nest cameras, Pixel Watch, and Google TV, this update integrates Gemini AI, promising an easier and more connected home experience.
The Gemini AI is the star of this update, enhancing home automation and smart device management. One notable addition is the ability to search through Nest camera footage using natural language queries. For instance, saying "Did someone deliver a package today?" will prompt the AI to scour camera history for relevant footage. However, this particular feature is reserved for select Nest Aware Plus subscribers.
The AI integration doesn't stop there. The new "Help Me Create" tool revolutionizes routine setup by allowing users to issue commands in plain language. Instead of navigating intricate menus, users can simply state their needs, such as "Turn on the Christmas lights outside, play my Holiday tunes playlist on the living room Nest speaker, and turn on the Christmas tree lights every night at sunset." Gemini AI takes care of the rest, simplifying the automation process.
Moreover, the update introduces a Google Home extension for the Gemini app, allowing users to manage lights, thermostats, and other smart home devices directly from the app. This enhancement aims to centralize and streamline smart home controls.
Beyond AI advancements, the fall update brings expanded integrations. Pixel Watch users can now view Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell feeds directly on their wrist, making it convenient to check who’s at the door when out and about. The Pixel Tablet adds support for Nest Doorbell notifications, providing options for two-way communication and quick responses.
Google TV also receives significant upgrades. A new pop-out panel with home controls lets users manage their smart home and view live camera feeds from the comfort of their couch. Enhanced show information features will help users choose what to watch, though this tool is not yet available for all shows and providers.
Additional features include always-on home controls on Nest Hub, an always-on dream clock for the Pixel Tablet, a Google Home favorites widget for Android, member access for trusted guests, and improved media controls within the Google Home app.
Google's latest update underscores its commitment to maintaining and enhancing its leadership in the smart home arena, offering users a more intuitive, connected, and convenient home environment.
