In a bid to prioritize privacy, Google has launched its Find My Device (FMD) network with a default setting of "With network in high-traffic areas only." However, users have reported ineffectiveness in locating trackers, raising concerns about the network's performance.

Google argues that the "aggregation by default" setting is a "key difference" compared to other finding networks, as it aims to make unwanted tracking more difficult, especially in private locations like users' homes. The company has implemented additional safeguards, such as not contributing crowdsourced location reports near a user's home, rate limiting and throttling location requests, and offering tracker alerts.

However, critics argue that Google could have handled the rollout better. They suggest that the network should have been opt-out instead of opt-in and should have been made available worldwide sooner. Some users also point out the absence of partners and readily available tags for purchase from UK retailers.

Acknowledging the limitations, Google admits that the default setting may affect the detection of Bluetooth trackers, particularly in low-traffic areas. The company encourages users to enable the "With network in all areas" setting to enhance tracker location accuracy. As more users opt-in, the network's ability to find lost items in lower-traffic regions is expected to improve.

Google has reassured users that it is actively working on enhancements to the Find My Device network's operations, aiming to improve speed and accuracy in locating lost items. With over a billion Android devices that can participate, the company remains hopeful that these enhancements and the growing network participation will address the challenges faced.

It remains to be seen whether Google will change the default setting, which has been criticized for impacting product usability and affecting the network's reputation at launch. Users are eagerly anticipating the promised improvements and updates in the coming weeks.
