Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has emerged victorious at the box office, obliterating expectations and raking in a colossal $80.0 million in its domestic opening weekend. The highly-anticipated MonsterVerse film also made a significant impact overseas, collecting $114.0 million, resulting in a staggering worldwide total of $194.0 million.

According to Comscore, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire surpassed projections, which had estimated an opening of around $50 million to $55 million. Its impressive performance secured the second-largest debut weekend of 2024, trailing only Dune: Part Two's $82.5 million.

This latest installment in the MonsterVerse franchise opened with much higher numbers than its predecessor, 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong, which had earned $48.5 million. However, it should be noted that the previous film was released during the later stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and was also available for streaming on HBO Max simultaneously. Godzilla vs. Kong ultimately amassed $100.9 million in North America and a whopping $470.1 million worldwide.

While Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire conquered the box office, it fell short of surpassing the opening weekend record set by 2014's Godzilla, the film that initiated the MonsterVerse. Godzilla had a strong start, earning $93.1 million domestically and going on to collect $200.6 million in North America and a remarkable $524.9 million worldwide.

Critics have had mixed opinions about Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. In our review, we stated that the film "serves up a berserk dreamscape with plenty of payoff to please the MonsterVerse faithful. Shame about the human stuff, though."

In second place at the box office was Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which experienced a 65% drop from its opening weekend, bringing in $15.7 million. The latest Ghostbusters film has accumulated a total of $73.4 million in North America and $108.5 million worldwide.

Dune: Part Two claimed the third spot with $11.1 million, boosting its domestic earnings to $252.3 million and its global total to an impressive $626.0 million.

The top five were rounded out by Kung Fu Panda 4, generating $10.2 million, and Immaculate, earning $3.2 million.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's monumental box office triumph has not only delighted fans of the MonsterVerse but has also showcased the enduring appeal of legendary cinematic creatures engaging in an epic battle for supremacy.
