**Cadillac to Compete in Formula 1 from 2026, Michael Andretti Steps Back**
In a surprising turn of events, Cadillac has confirmed its entry into the Formula 1 racing arena, set to debut as the sport's 11th team in 2026. This marks a significant shift in stance by the sport's owner, who had previously resisted the initiative announced in early 2023.
General Motors President Mark Reuss expressed his enthusiasm about the venture, stating, "As the pinnacle of motorsports, F1 demands boundary-pushing innovation and excellence. It's an honor for General Motors and Cadillac to join the world's premier racing series, and we're committed to competing with passion and integrity to elevate the sport for race fans around the world."
Despite the fanfare, Cadillac's full engineering prowess won’t be on display until 2028. The development of a new F1 hybrid powertrain is a complex task, requiring considerable time and effort. In the interim, Cadillac F1 will utilize customer engines from Ferrari for the 2026 and 2027 seasons before unveiling their GM-designed V6 hybrid powertrain.
The entry of Cadillac into Formula 1 benefited from the withdrawal of Michael Andretti, whose organization, Andretti Global, originally secured the bid. Michael Andretti, known for his successful career in IndyCar, stepped back from his involvement in late September. His departure cleared the way for his partner and investor, Dan Towriss, to take control under the new name TWG Global.
With Andretti stepping aside, TWG Global's bid gained traction. Towriss commented on the partnership stating, "We're excited to partner with General Motors in bringing a dynamic presence to Formula 1. Together, we're assembling a world-class team that will embody American innovation and deliver unforgettable moments to race fans around the world."
There is speculation that financial losses from an unsuccessful venture with AI startup Zapata AI contributed to Michael Andretti's decision to step back. Andretti Acquisition Corp, which had merged with Zapata AI, saw its stock plummet, reducing Andretti's holdings to essentially worthless.
Interestingly, the Cadillac F1 project now has the backing it needs from both General Motors and Formula 1, thanks to Towriss’s increased commitment to the program. Although Michael Andretti won’t be on the grid, his father, Mario Andretti, will maintain an ambassador role within the team, preserving the family’s legacy within the motorsport.
