In a recent development, Garces Trading Co., the cafe and mini-market located in the lobby of Philadelphia's Kimmel Center, has closed its doors after just a year in operation. The closure was described as a mutual decision between the restaurant operator, Ideation Hospitality, and the Philadelphia Orchestra and Kimmel Center Inc. (POKC). The decision was reportedly influenced by the cafe becoming a financial burden.

Scott Campanella, CEO of Ideation, expressed that the closure of Garces Trading Co. was necessary due to the financial strain it had placed on the business. However, the POKC spokesperson expressed hopes of bringing in another operator to open a new cafe accessible from the Broad Street entrance by summer.

Despite this setback, the bar located in the lobby near Verizon Hall, which serves snacks and refreshments, will continue to operate. Ideation Hospitality is known for running Garces' restaurants, including Amada, Buena Onda, and the Olde Bar, as well as Garces Events, which has been operating out of the Kimmel Center for over a decade.

Additionally, the future of Volvér, the upscale restaurant also located at the Kimmel Center, currently remains uncertain. Jose Garces, the chief culinary officer of Ideation, expressed his expectation that Volvér would close in June, coinciding with the end of the Kimmel's 2023-24 season. However, no final decision has been made regarding the Volvér space or its relationship with Ideation and Garces Events, according to Campanella.

Volvér, which opened in 2014, gained popularity for its dinner seatings that required tickets. In recent times, the restaurant also hosted a guest-chef series, which aimed to provide visibility to chefs from underrepresented communities.

It is important to note that while Garces Trading Co.'s closure marks the end of its presence at the Kimmel Center, the other location at the Cira Centre remains unaffected.

The addition of Garces Trading Co. to the Kimmel Center's lobby was seen as a step towards creating a more inviting space. Inquirer culture reporter Peter Dobrin noted that the cafe's presence brought a level of steady activity and transparency to the arts center, which had been lacking in the past.

As the Kimmel Center looks to the future, the closure of Garces Trading Co. raises questions about the viability of Volvér and the overall dining experience within the renowned performing arts venue.

Only time will tell what lies ahead for these culinary establishments within the Kimmel Center and how it will impact the cultural landscape of Philadelphia.
