The latest installment in director George Miller's post-apocalyptic series, "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," is off to a rocky start at the international box office. The film has earned $33.3 million from 75 territories, bringing its global debut weekend total to $58.9 million. However, this falls short of expectations, considering the movie's hefty $168 million production budget.

On the domestic front, "Furiosa" is in a close race with Sony's animated film, "The Garfield Movie," for the top spot on the box office charts. Both movies grossed approximately $25 million over the weekend, with an estimated total of $31 million through Memorial Day on Monday. Unfortunately, this marks one of the worst Memorial Day holiday weekends in decades, with neither film able to generate significant box office numbers.

"Furiosa," a prequel to the widely acclaimed "Mad Max: Fury Road" from 2015, is struggling to match the success of its predecessor. Despite positive reviews and audience reception, the film, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, has not been able to attain the same level of praise as "Fury Road." As a result, it has primarily appealed to its core fanbase of older male viewers, rather than breaking out to a wider audience.

Internationally, "Furiosa" had a strong start in several key markets. In Korea, it earned $4.5 million, followed by France with $2.6 million, the United Kingdom with $2.5 million, Mexico with $2.4 million, and Australia with $2.2 million. Notably, IMAX screenings contributed significantly to the film's global box office sales, accounting for $9.5 million, including $4.7 million from international markets.

On the other hand, "The Garfield Movie" has been steadily gaining momentum in terms of worldwide ticket sales, with a total of $91.1 million to date. Despite being less expensive to produce, with a budget of $60 million, the film, featuring the voice of Chris Pratt as the famous orange cat, has been performing well internationally. It placed third on the international weekend charts, earning $14 million from 51 overseas markets. "The Garfield Movie" has yet to be released in major markets like Japan, France, and Australia.

In the midst of this box office battle, "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," distributed by Disney and 20th Century, managed to secure second place on the overseas charts. The film collected $20.6 million from 52 markets, while also earning $17.1 million in North America over the four-day weekend. With a total international gross of $172 million and a worldwide total of $294.8 million, the latest installment in the "Apes" franchise ranks as the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year. However, to match the global success of its predecessors like "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," which grossed $710 million, "Kingdom" will require more momentum.

Rounding out the international box office, Paramount's "IF," a fantasy-comedy directed by John Krasinski and starring Ryan Reynolds, earned $11.3 million from 64 territories, securing fourth place. Domestically, the family-friendly film added approximately $21 million over the four-day holiday weekend, bringing its total worldwide earnings to $103.6 million. With a budget of $110 million, "IF" will rely on sustained performance throughout the summer to justify its production and marketing costs.

As the battle for box office supremacy continues, "Furiosa" faces an uphill climb to meet expectations and match the success of its predecessor. Meanwhile, "The Garfield Movie" aims to dominate in markets yet to be released, while "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" and "IF" strive to maintain momentum and make a mark at the global box office.
