In a new lawsuit obtained by Rolling Stone, a former employee of Kanye West's Yeezy and Donda Academy, Trevor Phillips, has filed a lawsuit against the rapper-turned-artist Ye. Phillips joins a growing number of former employees who have taken legal action against the 46-year-old. The 42-page complaint offers a glimpse into the alleged experiences of working for the eccentric artist, including claims of workplace harassment, preferential treatment towards white employees, and troubling statements made by Ye.
According to Phillips, who is Black, it was evident from the beginning of his nine-month employment in November 2022 that Ye treated Black staff considerably worse than their white counterparts. Phillips states that Ye would berate and scream at Black employees while never raising his voice to the white staff. The lawsuit also alleges that Ye's discriminatory behavior extended to making antisemitic remarks, with threats to target the LGBTQ+ community as well.
The lawsuit further claims that Ye made some of his "dangerous rhetoric" in front of Donda Academy students. Phillips recalls an incident where Ye allegedly told two children that he wanted them to shave their heads and mentioned his intention to install a jail at the school, where students could be locked in cages. When Phillips confronted Ye about his bigotry, the artist reportedly responded with harassment, humiliation, and even threatened him with physical violence.
Phillips was hired to work for West's fashion line, Yeezy, shortly after Ye's fallout with Adidas and Gap over his antisemitic remarks. However, due to the continued backlash, Phillips' role expanded to include overseeing projects related to the Donda Academy and a self-sustainable community project. Despite promises of a $100 per hour pay rate, Phillips alleges that he was consistently underpaid and experienced delayed payments due to frozen Yeezy bank accounts.
One of Phillips' first assignments was to convert a Calabasas property into a new campus for Donda Academy. However, Ye reportedly changed the plans and requested the use of a dilapidated church instead. Phillips expressed concerns about the safety and legality of the renovations, leading to his demotion when he voiced his objections.
The lawsuit also details instances of inappropriate commentary made by Ye, including spreading antisemitism during school meetings and expressing a preference for dating white women. Ye allegedly boasted about using $2 million from the school's budget for a trip to Paris.
In a peculiar encounter, Phillips recounts a meeting at Nobu Hotel in Malibu, where Ye discussed business plans while going on a rant about Hitler's greatness, denying the Holocaust, and expressing homophobic views. During the meeting, Ye allegedly engaged in explicit conversations about his sex life and showcased nude photos of a woman he had previously flaunted to Yeezy staff members.
Phillips claims that his relationship with Ye deteriorated by May 2023, culminating in a "temper tantrum" where Ye threatened to punch him. The lawsuit also alleges that Ye displayed violent behavior, attempting to destroy the garden and physically threatening Phillips.
Phillips is seeking at least $35,000 in damages for whistleblower retaliation, discrimination based on race, a hostile work environment, and other causes of action. Kanye West's representative did not provide an immediate comment on the lawsuit.
