In response to the High Court's ruling requiring the draft of ultra-Orthodox men, former Shas MK and member of the Shas Council of Torah Sages, Rabbi Moshe Maya, expressed his disapproval and vowed resistance. The ruling has sparked demonstrations, with a group of ultra-Orthodox Jews obstructing traffic and the light rail in Jerusalem.
Rabbi Maya, speaking on a radio show, voiced his belief that conscripting into the army goes against religious principles. He cited a clear halacha (Jewish law) stating that yeshiva members are prohibited from joining the military. According to him, entering yeshiva halls to draft ultra-Orthodox individuals would be met with resistance akin to being forced to desecrate Shabbat.
Furthermore, Rabbi Maya emphasized that even those who choose not to study in a yeshiva are forbidden to enlist in the IDF. He argued that those who attack Torah scholars overlook the contribution they make to society, stating that without their presence, there would be a higher toll of casualties in times of conflict.
The former Shas MK concluded by asserting that the role of ultra-Orthodox individuals in times of war is to study and learn, as that is how God will instill fear in their enemies.
MK Naama Lazimi of the Labor Party responded to Rabbi Maya's comments, expressing disagreement and questioning his representation of tradition. Lazimi accused Rabbi Maya and others of appropriating the Sephardi tradition while straying from its true essence. She directly addressed Arye Deri, asking about the absence of moderate Sephardic rabbis and suggesting their tradition was being silenced in the pursuit of power.
The issue of ultra-Orthodox conscription continues to be a subject of debate and tension within Israeli society. The High Court's ruling has led to protests and contrasting viewpoints on the intersection of religion and military service.
