Former President Donald Trump has confirmed that he is considering at least six names for his potential vice presidential pick in this year's election. During a Fox News town hall on Tuesday night, Trump disclosed that his shortlist includes Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Florida Rep. Byron Donalds, former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott.
The names were presented to Trump by town hall host Laura Ingraham, who suggested all six individuals as potential running mates. Trump acknowledged the list and confirmed that they are all under consideration. It is possible that additional names could also be added to Trump's list, with names like New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance being speculated upon.
Trump emphasized that he is looking for a running mate who embodies important qualities, including the ability to potentially serve as an effective president if the need arises, alignment on various issues such as border security, foreign affairs, and military strength, as well as common sense in decision-making. He previously expressed interest in selecting a woman as his running mate but maintained that the priority is to choose the best person for the role.
While Trump mentioned that he already knows who his pick would be, specifics were not revealed. Notably, DeSantis, Ramaswamy, and Scott, who were initially opponents in the Republican nomination race, have since endorsed Trump. Scott, who attended the town hall, received praise from Trump, with the former president commending him as a strong advocate.
In the 2016 election, Trump selected then-Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his vice presidential candidate. However, Pence and Trump experienced a rift following the 2020 election when Pence refused to block the certification of Joe Biden's win.
