South Carolina voters are heading to the ballot box today, February 24, 2024, for the Republican presidential primary in the Palmetto State. Former President Donald Trump is competing against his last remaining rival, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. Polls opened at 7:00 a.m. and will close at 7:00 p.m.

South Carolina operates under an open primary system, allowing registered voters to participate in either the Republican or Democratic primary, but not both. In the Democratic primary earlier this month, President Biden emerged victorious in a landslide.

A total of 50 delegates are at stake in South Carolina, with 1,215 delegates needed to secure the Republican nomination for president. Currently, Trump leads with 63 delegates, while Haley has secured 17.

South Carolina is historically a conservative state and has voted Republican in every presidential election since 1976. Trump is in the lead as voters head to the polls, with Haley striving to prove her competitiveness in her home state.

Haley's campaign has signaled its intention to continue the race through Super Tuesday by announcing a significant ad-buy in various states. Meanwhile, Trump holds a commanding double-digit lead in the polls leading up to the primary.
